I am adding comments regarding my previous review as well as this purchase. Very happy to report that the first attempt produced a full box of mushrooms. The second flush is underway. The second box was purchased for a second colonized 5# multi grain spawn bag. As of today, the very same steps provided by Midwest were followed and I am exposing the second box to light starting today. Again I can only state that if you follow the directions, the system seems to work.
I actually originally bought the classic grow kit, and I followed everything to the best of my ability, but I still have quite a few contaminated jars, and the yield was low. So I used the equipment from the classic grow kit and converted into a bulk grow kit. It was so much easier with a much higher yield. For one thing, the substrate bags, or the mega jars with the self-healing injection ports are pretty much contamination proof. It was so easy. I've done this now with both the big 5 grain jars, and with the big 5 grain spawn bags, and I can't tell much difference except maybe the jars colonize faster. Once the jars/bags are colonized, you just break up the colonized substrate, mix it with the bulk casing mix, cover with a layer of bulk casing mix (and perlite if you wish), and before you know it, the whole thing is colonized and ready to be exposed to light to fruit, and man they fruited like crazy. I know for many people the traditional jar method works just fine, but for me, I found it to be much more complicated with a much lower yield than the bulk casing method, so if you're not sure what you want to do, I would go with the bulk casing method. In my limited experience, easier with higher yield. And of course, buy all of your supplies at MidWest Grow Kits. They have the best supplies, regarding both quality and price.
