Pros:
  • Easy
  • Cost Effective
Cons:
This system is incredibly easy to use and the Midwest customer service team always answers questions quickly if there is any confusion. The stirring bar arrived stuck to the lid of the jar but I was advised to use a heavy book or rubber mallet to knock it off the lid which worked perfectly making the product fully functional.

I would highly recommend this to anyone due to the long shelf life & ease of use. The only thing I found to be disappointing was that it only came with one syringe & needle. I know you can reuse them with liquid culture but it would be nice to have a backup.

Liquid Culture (2x received) Review

Pros:
  • Ease of use
Cons:
  • I'll let you know!
The contents of the package arrived in fine working shape. With the number of items shipped, one of the two jars of liquid leaked due to being packaged on its side. There was minimal liquid lost (I compared the relative levels of the two jars).

I was worried about dislodging the magnetic bar from the lid (it attached itself there during shipping-I presume), especially after the instructions indicated sometimes a lot of force is required. I learned that a firm flick knocks the bar into the liquid--worked on both first try after arranging it under the lid away from the self healing injection port and hepa filter.

Having never used this technique (including a spore syringe), I was quite pleased all around. I have had experience with agar and live culture, and am very impressed with the ease of inoculating sterilely and using the magnetic bar to agitate the culture.

After 11 days, one jar is going strong with a nice cloudy culture, seemly soon ready for further inoculations. The other jar (as well as all the grain) was inoculated with a different strain and none has signs of life. Bummer regarding the lack of germination, but both the liquid and grain jars also do not show any signs of contamination. So if the liquid remains as is, I will inoculate it with the formerly mentioned jar ;-D ... Maybe I will update the post at a later date.

Bought the liquid culture to transfer from agar and has shown no signs of contamination and growing mycelium in the 5-7 day time span. Great product.
